Di Gi Charat and the other characters began as a mascot for the company Broccoli. Broccoli makes computer games, trading card games, character merchandise and anime. Broccoli used it for Gamers, which is a chain of stores. Di Gi Charat was origionally "Digital Character Total Shop Gamers" but was shortened to "Di Gi Charat." Di Gi Charat is drawn by Kage Donbo.

Di Gi Charat became very popular in Japan and the merchandise was sold quickly. Soon, there was commercials, CDs, a TV show, and other things made for it.
